Convent of Sinners (1986) La monaca del peccato (original title)

Nunsploitation flick from director Joe D'Amato is actually very tame for the genre and instead of nothing but sex, the film goes for drama and protest against the Catholic Church. After being raped by her father, a young girl (Eva Grimaldi) is sent to a convent where she becomes very close with the head nun. Soon the other nuns get jealous and decide to tell the higher ups that the girl is possessed by the Devil. Running just under 90-minutes, the film does drag in spots but D'Amato's message against the Church is loud and very clear. Most of these nunsploitation films are nothing but lesbian sex but that too is rather small in this film as it's clear the director is going for something deeper. The camera-work (also by D'Amato) is very good and the leads do a nice job as well.

Zootopia (2016)

That might seem utterly bizarre, yet it's accurate. Directors Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush have delivered an astonishing film.

Zootopia starts off in ruthless fashion, depicting the death of a rabbit to a fearsome predator. That this is the setup to the school play makes no difference: The satire throughout the rest of the movie is just as brutal.

Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) defies social norms when she becomes the first rabbit police officer in the city of Zootopia, where history was made when predator and prey learned to co-exist in peace. Still, old bigotries persist, and there is an undercurrent of resentment among the species.

Being stereotyped as docile and weak, Judy is assigned parking duty. In order to further her career, Hopps blackmails a con-artist fox named Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman) into assisting the investigation of the mysterious disappearance of Emmet Otterton, who is one of 14 predators who have gone missing. Time is of the essence, for if Judy does not solve the case in two days, she will be pressured to resign her new job.

I dare not give away more of the plot. Even so, I had the story spoiled for me before I saw this film, and I was still enthralled by the wondrous and dangerous world of this film. This is an adult movie: Just because no curse words are used doesn't mean that this sober and grim tale is not aimed directly at mature audiences. And while it is sober and grim, it is also hilarious and moving. It's all in the dialogue, in which the characters use elevated speech that will go over the heads of young children.

For example, Judy tells Nick when they first meet, "You an articulate, good fox," to which Nick replies "And you are the least patronizing animal I've met."

And speaking of young children, they probably shouldn't attend this film. There are scenes of violence and menace that might leave 6- year-old kids wailing. The snappy one-liners and uproarious sight gags won't calm them down. Anyone who is mature and over the age of 9 should be able to handle this film, though.

In short, if you love movies, you should see this production. It is among the best work that Disney has ever made, and it is one of the most exhilarating films I have ever seen.

The Other Side of the Door (2016)

It's always a risk when Hollywood takes the premise of horror from other countries, because there's lingering intrinsic value that might not be conveyed properly. Luckily, a good atmospheric nuance, respect for the culture and outstanding acting performances, even from the child actress, ensure that "The Other Side of the Door" releases a harrowing experience for audience from any side of the globe.

Maria (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Michael (Jeremy Sisto) are a western couple living in India. Everything seems fine, but unfortunately she is struck by a tragic accident. Trapped in unstable state and in an attempt to remedy this, she performs a dark ritual. It's a very compelling set-up, because the local ambiance of India is preserved appropriately, and fine acting from the entire family produces a compelling story.

Sarah Wayne Callies does a wonderful job as the desperate mother, she's utterly believable and sympathetic to audience. The strong performance goes a long way to build up dread, in fact a lot of the terrifying scenes work because she, in a sense, sells them so well. Jeremy Sisto is also a decent addition as the concerned husband and father.

Typically, the accusation of one's mental health is a staple gimmick of horror, yet it's quite understandably for the on-screen family to undergo this struggle. Credit goes to Sofia Rosinsky as the child, she's adorable yet shows enough peculiar signs to make viewers wonder if the ordeal has changed her. The movie even throws a cuddly dog to raise the eerie tension and apprehension whether it will also be a victim.

Cinematography adds the traditional value as it includes the grimy nature of India. It often shows the city or village in suitable tone, details such as those in the busy streets or quiet alleys are fine additions. Suchitra Pillai-Malik as Piki the maid rounds up the cast, while also gives a more identifiable foreign vibe.

The creepy moments, admittedly, aren't incredibly original. The movie has a nice buildup, but it plays around with the usual trepidation and suspense of dark corners while the narrative is also predictable since it gives many hints. However, the cast and presentation deliver confidently. The production knows its way around the genre, giving the horror the right and occasional unforeseen timing, so they never feel like cheap scares.

"The Other Side of the Door" opens up many chances for horror with its appreciation of foreign culture and delightfully convincing performance from its cast.

Killing Them Safely (2015) Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle (original title)

To take this movie seriously, you have to be willing to believe that our Home Office (like the Yanks FBI) is too stupid to see if the taser is doing more good than harm. This basketball playing filmmaker is arrogant enough to believe that he understand the science and statistics better than our top coppers. Based only on the interviews and trailer, this appears to be an advertisement for the Ambulance-Chasing Barrister Burton and his expert witness Zipes. I wonder if Nick is bright enough to even understand that he was worked by these smarter adults. Nick's arrogance more than compensates for his limited abilities since he has decided that he understands things that the Smith brothers did not. And Nick understands things better than 500 000 coppers that use these things. Amazing. What does Saint Nick want us coppers to do? Should we say, "Gosh we were too stupid to understand the pros and cons of these weapons, but now that Nick Bernardino has opened our eyes, we will throw them in the rubbish and go back to the club."The sad things is that people that are totally ignorant will cop work might take this film seriously and this could lead to more cop-hating out there.

Four Seasons (2014)

I'm mad that I watched this movie. The ending was so rushed and unrealistic.

The movie is kind of like an extremely bootleg Boomerang (only because they share Robin Givens and she's playing a similar character) or How to Be A Player. This playboy wants to get married, so he comes up with this "genius" plan to date 4 different women by seasons to see which one he wants. Clearly not well thought out but you'd think it would make for a great plot device. Except none of the women really cross paths and he just moves on to the next without any real friction. And he never changes.

**spoilers ahead**

He dates Bianca who clearly annoys him from the beginning yet he sticks with her for no real reason, then he uses her credit cards to date another chick which is real trifling. Shockingly, there is no fallout from this either. This dude brought nothing to the table for any of these women except for the one who he was committing fraud for.

But the most ridiculous part comes in the end, when he finally decides who to pick and just drives up on her randomly even though he hasn't spoken to her in months, says some weak-ass lines and bam, she takes him back just like that. No real reconciliation and then it's over. It would have been better if she turned him down and forced him to mature, or at least if there was some sort of growth shown, but in the end he's the same man-child and she just looks stupid.

Providence (2016)

I thought the format was very creative. It was basically a silent picture with the only sound being a soundtrack, that consisted of what I gather to be faith based music.

The entire story was very clear, very easy to understand. I saw two people connected since childhood, but somehow it took forty years for them to get together.

For the most part I was impress with the production. A lot was done on a small scale, and what was done was great. There were a few times where the story drag because no words were use, but I feel that's just something that happens with silent films and you have to get use to.

The soundtrack was not my thing, but the movie and it's message on waiting for love was nice.

The Life Before Her Eyes (2007)

I also saw this at Toronto, and visually speaking, this movie is one of the best looking films of the year. This director's first film was the great "House of Sand and Fog" and here he confirms how talented he is. Uma Thurman hasn't been better as she plays a woman who is now well into adulthood, living in the small town that she grew up in, with a professor husband and a little girl. I love the way Perelman uses flashbacks here to inform us about Thurman as a teen. In many films, flashbacks can yank us around and cut tension, but here Evan Rachel Wood is so good that the two characters are seamlessly interwoven in a way that we are treated to a complex character study of a grown woman who is driving herself mad with regret and anxiety and guilt. There's nothing more fascinating than watching conflict that is internal rather than external, and Thurman here is so good, I hope she is remembered come Oscar season.

Just a solid movie in every way. Good score from James Horner, the guy who did the music for "A Beautiful Mind" and "House of Sand and Fog", equally lovely scores in their own right.
