In Jackson Heights (2015)

Jackson Heights, Queens, New York City is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse communities in the United States and the world. There are immigrants from every country in South America, Mexico, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and China. Some are citizens, some have green cards, some are without documents. The people who live in Jackson Heights, in their cultural, racial and ethnic diversity, are representative of the new wave of immigrants to America. 167 languages are spoken in Jackson Heights. Some of the issues the film raises-assimilation, integration, immigration and cultural and religious differences-are common to all the major cities of the Western world. The subject of the film is the daily life of the people in this community-their businesses, community centers, religions, and political, cultural and social lives-and the conflict between maintaining ties to traditions of the countries of origin and the need to learn and adapt to American ways and values. ...

Janis: Little Girl Blue (2015)

An experienced documentarist who poses her eye on one of the greatest in the history of music. Very remarkable the amount of footage of Janis in her glory days. Presetns a lot of testimonials from people very close to her(both professionally, and personally), which allows us to feel a little more closely, both the achievements and thesuccesses, as well as the sorrows and sufferings of the genius of Janis. Another positive aspect is the letters or written records of Janis. IT also lets us enjoy many moments of live music, which is always good in a music documentary. Very exciting and entertaining.

Noma My Perfect Storm (2015)

'Noma My Perfect Storm' is a feature-length documentary film about the renowned chef René Redzepi set against the backdrop of his Copenhagen-based restaurant, NOMA, voted the Best Restaurant In The World 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. The story is not simply about a chef at the stove, but the balanced story of a man, who came from a disparate and humble background and against all odds, rose to the height of the gastronomic world and became a God of Food and one of the most influential people on the planet. It's a story about what it takes to be the best restaurant in the world, the sacrifices that are made and the pragmatic choices that are taken to maintain its success. It is a story of human relationships in which joy and sorrow blend to give birth to complex and vibrant meals.

The Paradise Suite (2015)

A movie with parallel stories that meet each other in ingenious ways. An intense movie with very explicit scenes. A production with Swedish, Dutch, Swedish, Bulgarian and Yugoslavian actors. Shows many spots of the city of Amsterdam. The movie puts the spotlight on the dark side of Amsterdam's red light district and on problems related to immigration in Europe. Very natural acting performances. For me personally, this is one of the best movie I've seen in years and I'd say that with this masterpiece, Joost van Ginkel enters the circle of leading European directors like Vinterberg, etc. I would highly recommend this movie, especially to people from overseas and, in particular, the USA: widen your scope beyond Hollywood productions!

The Surprise (2015)

"De Surprise" marks the long-awaited return of Mike van Diem (of 1997 "Karakter" acclaim). I had no idea what to expect, but wasn't disappointed: it's a clever, self-written, self-produced dark comedy, that surprises with its off-kilter locations, developments and characters.

Starting with a funeral and quickly progressing to boy-meets-girl, the setup is of the well-traveled romcom variety, but the story heads for loftier territories after this and keeps us engaged throughout. Van Koningsbrugge and Verbaan acquit themselves well in parts that require a more understated, highbrow approach than their usual brand of comedy, and - essential for this genre - I rooted for them all the way through.

What kind of bugs me, though: the main characters in "De Surprise" exhibit a Wes Anderson-ish formal approach to emotions, which, combined with a distinct Wes Anderson-ish quirky world view, setting and storyline, almost made me feel like I was watching a WA-movie, only one without Wes' exceptional talents for art direction and editing.

This is not to say "De Surprise" lacks originality: but the day after, it did impress me more as a tight exercise in style than a profound exercise in storytelling - quite unlike the superior "Karakter". It does re-establish Van Diem as an independent, original filmmaker, and here's hoping he'll stick to cinema the upcoming decade.

Rendez-Vous (2015)

I gave it a go, I thought it might be similar to Timboektoe which was pretty entertaining. But no it was once again this dark dramatic crap most dutch movies feature. As if acting has to be all strong emotions all the time. Anyway the result an entire movie of awkward tension. I don't see how anyone can enjoy watching such a thing. Then there is the standard bad acting going on, mostly because of the as per usual unrealistic scripting full of sentences people rarely actually say in real life.

So this family moves to France in an effort to save the marriage although this only becomes clear later on in the movie as it starts out more like they were seeking adventure. Making it very odd how willing the wife is to entertain flirtations with one of the workers they hire to rebuild the decaying house she inherited from her mom (who didn't raise her).

Then there is the one other dutch guy in the village who just happens to find the daughter when she disappears (ran of to the toys department) wile shopping. This whole character is so weird. The bad acting doesn't help either.

Anyway lots of gloominess.

Long (boring) story short, unhappy wife sleeps with hired worker, gets pregnant, turns out he is the son of the weird dutch guy, tensions rise, the weird guy gets pushed, falls, hits his head and dies, son takes the blame.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (2015)

Awful! Just awful! Seriously, they are STILL making these garbage films! No why? That's one of the FAQs for the film: Why the hell are they still making these? The answer: Money. And just for the sake of entertaining the kiddies and trying to amuse small children.

OK, let's be honest here. The original entourage in December 2007 was good. It was the most faithful to the original AATC. The Squeakquel released two years later in December 2009 was bad. It more or less follows a very similar plot of the first one except with a few differences: the boys go to school, get bullied by football jocks, meet their opposite sex, and end up in the hands of Dave's cousin Toby in his mid twenties (a former high school dropout). The third one, Chipwrecked released two years later in December 2011 was just awful. I hated it so much it was just like watching paint dry. (Sorry if my reviews on the previous films were positive, it was a big typo, my keyboard got screwed up but I REALLY HATED IT!) and now you derail this crashed train wreck even more by screwing up this franchise by adding another unnecessary sequel: The Road Chip, releases today, December 18, 2015 in Toronto, Canada. It just delivers a horrible empty message that not even 4 year olds will like. Oh my god, stop this PLEASE STOP THIS! Hopefully this is the last film in the franchise. This horrible franchise needs to end already. They should have stopped a long time ago in 2007.

Hopefully Star Wars: The Force Awakens will totally obliterate this film. I sure hope Star Wars will destroy this film and end the franchise! The Force Awakens already has 94-97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the Road Chip falls extremely far short of even a fresh 60% rating. It has a 14-20% rotten rating. This film is the WORST SEQUEL EVER! Even worse than Speed 2: Cruise Control, Ted 2, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. The Force Awakens is an excellent example of an amazing sequel. WATCH STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS INSTEAD OF THIS JUNK!!!!!!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

We waited for years, and it's finally here. At 3 o'clock this morning I entered the cinema wide-eyed, full of hope. As was with many people's childhoods, Star Wars was a staple of mine, and to this day the original trilogy still stand as some of my favourite films. J.J. Abrams famously managed to reignite the Star Trek franchise with two fantastic films, so when tasked with doing similar to Star Wars, some people were sceptical, but nonetheless excited. The main questions is: did he deliver? Yes he damn well did!

You know that tight throat feeling you get when you have a sudden urge of adrenaline, for the last hour of the film, I had that feeling, sitting there on the edge of my seat, heart pounding fast. What I was watching was exhilarating to say the least.

Let's look more at the film (don't worry, there will be no spoilers featured). First off, the opening - the classic text followed by the panning shot to a planet (or death star) with a Star Destroyer emerging into the frame, it all features, as does the use of practical effects and puppets / robots over the extensive use of CGI that was utilised in the prequel trilogy, thus giving fans the old school style of Star Wars they wanted oh so much. The film is fast-paced, with stunning action scenes and spectacles, but not rushed, the shots linger and the camera moves gracefully, giving us a spectacular view of the situation at hand.

The prequel trilogy shunted the franchise on a downward spiral, the overuse of CGI and the introduction of some of the most annoying characters in film (a-hem Jar Jar Binks), but Abrams, the finest choice of a director to reignite the franchise, did nothing more than show pure love for the films and has created a sequel that definitely exceeded my expectations. A film that features endless nostalgia with appearances from Ford (who is beyond fantastic), Fisher, Hamill even Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca and constant references to the original trilogy.

The only partial negative aspect is its somewhat lack of originality, it acts more as an homage to 'A New Hope' than an original tale. But if you overthink points like this when viewing it, you won't enjoy it, so just empty your head of that and watch the film for what it is: a space opera that acts as nothing more than a sheer piece of movie magic!
